| Protection of Monuments |
| There are 174 building of national importance protected by the Archaeological Survey of India. Department of Archaeology, GNCTD, is responsible for protection, conservation and maintenance of monuments of regional importance in Delhi. It derives its authority and jurisdiction under the provisions of the Delhi Ancient and Historical Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 2004. |
| In 2008, following discussions between Department of Archaeology and INTACH Delhi Chapter, a MOU was signed in which it was agreed that the resources and expertise of INTACH Delhi Chapter would be utilized towards protection, conservation and management of monuments and sites in Delhi. |
The project will be executed in two phases. The first phase entails preparation of site plans, schedule for protection and photo documentation and structural description of monuments. This will provide sufficient documentation for notifying the buildings in the official Gazette, and thus declaring them to be protected by the Department of Archaeology, GNCTD. A total of 250 buildings from INTACH’s Delhi listing have been identified for notification. In the first instance 92 buildings in proximity to Commonwealth Games 2010 venues are being documented. |
| To date, 60 sties have been surveyed and their protection notifications have been duly prepared. The second phase entails structural conservation, chemical preservation and refurbishment of monuments.
Thereafter, similar work on rest of the 250 monuments will be undertaken. |
| Thus in Delhi, there will be 174 buildings of national importance and 250 buildings of state level importance that will be accorded protection. For the remaining 900 odd buildings of local level significance, the INTACH Delhi Chapter is working towards getting the Municipalities to adopt them. |
